Sandy Soils, Exposed Gardens & Getting the Post Spec Right

Sandhurst takes its character in part from the sandy heathland soils that dominate much of this corner of Berkshire. While sandy, free-draining ground has advantages for some garden work, it presents a specific challenge for fence post installation: posts set into loose, sandy soil without adequate concrete encasement are prone to movement, leaning, and eventual failure, often far sooner than posts installed in firmer ground.

When we work in Sandhurst, we always ensure posts are set into concrete to a sufficient depth to counteract the instability of lighter soils. For gardens in particularly exposed positions, such as those backing onto the heathland around Caesar’s Camp or on higher ground between Sandhurst and Crowthorne, we’ll typically specify longer posts and deeper setting depths than we would on a more sheltered suburban plot.

The proximity to woodland and heathland also means that gardens in Sandhurst often have tree roots running close to or along boundary lines. We’re experienced in working around existing root systems carefully and will always flag any potential complications during our site visit rather than discovering them mid-installation. Where root intrusion makes standard post positions impractical, we can discuss alternative anchoring solutions to ensure a solid, secure result.
